Day Two | In Celebration of Dr. King

January 23, 2012

In recognition of Martin Luther King Day last Monday, Aida and I joined the many people visiting the new MLK memorial just off Washington DC’s Tidal Basin. The sharp wind and cold temperatures didn’t seem to hold back the thousands of visitors who now have a place to celebrate his great life and keep his memory alive for countless years ahead.

Reflecting Dr. King’s extraordinary power and inspired by a famous line from his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech (“Out of the mountain of despair, a stone of hope”), the memorial features a 30-foot statue, two pieces of granite that represent the struggles he endured, and a crescent-shaped marble wall inscribed with quotations from his sermons and addresses. Like the Tidal Basin, the memorial’s perimeter will be lined with cherry blossom trees, with their annual peak blooming period coinciding with the anniversary of King’s assassination, April 4th.

As we tried to keep warm walking past smiling faces bundled in hats and scarves, we were lucky to catch young members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity from the University of Maryland, performing their signature stepping dance. The MLK Memorial was made possible largely due to the great efforts of the fraternity that Martin Luther King Jr. once belonged to when attending Boston University.

And only the second outing with my new Panasonic GX1 micro four-thirds camera, I once more enjoyed not lugging around the much larger DSLR while still capturing excellent image quality. Like in NYC, I used the mix of Olympus and Panasonic lenses and once again, preferred the Olympus 12mm, notably for its manual focus used during video recording. As the sun peaked through the clouds and started to set, a beautiful warm light illuminated the memorial and created a dreamlike setting in which to shoot. The bouncing highlights and settling shadows on the marble wall were magnificent and the birds circling overhead brought an added sense of life to the towering statue of this larger than life man.

Casey and Tim: Engagement Photos (Round 1)

October 5, 2010

The National Park service claims that “The [National] Mall is the heart of the Nation’s Capital and of the entire United States of America.” While some may say there’s a big United States out there, there was certainly a lot of heart out there last Sunday! Casey and Tim, engaged to be married in January, came out for a great day of shooting over the endless grass, and show heart they did. A great couple, to befriend and to photograph, they easily created humor, intrigue, and loving expression, all while left to their own devices.

On this fine Sunday afternoon, the weather played its usual “I was beautiful yesterday when you sat inside, so I’ll gladly have my fun with you today.” Never fails. Though after some hesitation, the sun broke through the clouds and called “game on” as Tim and I spoke from across the river. Meeting on the Mall late afternoon, we quickly started within an unobstructed range of the Capitol dome and gradually moved our way towards the Lincoln Memorial, pausing for photographs and outfit changes. (The Mall lends itself nicely to such shoots, offering changing rooms near the foot of the Washington Monument, at the World War II Memorial, and at the Lincoln Memorial.) In addition to its monuments and memorials, the Mall is undoubtedly a unique and picturesque location for a photo shoot with its reflecting pool, tree-lined walks, countless flags, tidal basin, and much more. And as the day grows older and the sun dips lower, its romantic charm is truly exposed.

Despite all the historical significance and beauty abound, a welled dressed couple being photographed will certainly draw their own share of inquisitive eyes. Luckily this Dapper Duo played it cool and remained unfazed by the passing attention, showing me all the playful love I needed for some great images. Near the end of the session, an inquiry even came as to who the celebrity couple was!

Casey, Tim, you guys were fantastic, you’re a pleasure to work with, and I look forward to Round 2, this time with a vibrant Fall foliage backdrop!

And lastly, a special thanks to my lovely, patient, and quick-learning assistant, Aida.

Enjoy!

July 4th on the National Mall

July 6, 2010

Happy July 4th y’all! Hope you all had a nice weekend!

I myself spent a few hours Saturday and Sunday on the National Mall here in DC. For those not familiar with DC, the “Mall” is an outdoor lawn area between the Capitol Building, Washington Monument, WWII Memorial (my favorite!), Reflecting Pool, and Lincoln Memorial. During the summer, the Mall’s home to many city-sponsored festivals and big screen movies as well as people sightseeing, playing, or simply relaxing. I really do enjoy it. This weekend, it was home to the Folk Life Festival, big-band pop music, and closing out the 4th, DC’s famous firework display. Here are just a few of my favorite images… hope you enjoy!

(PS. The girl here in the yellow was great (I have several more of her)! A bit of a hose hog (with others lined up behind her for their never approaching turn), she was fortunately kind to me as she kept turning in my direction, only a foot away, and giving me a look such as “you know you’re asking for it, right?!” . . . but would then turn back around and shoot another unsuspecting person simply walking by, ha!)
