2008 – SHOOTING THROUGH EUROPE

With the Australia / New Zealand travel bug irritating him behind his 2007 desk-job, Rubin decided to take his camera and savings to Europe for a nine month backpacking, life and photographic, journey. Through the hosteling world and Couchsurfing community, Rubin opened himself to the vastness of people and cultures, environments, and opportunities . . . leaving with countless new friends, experiences, teachings, and tens of thousands of photographs, spanning the wide gamut of a travel photographer.

Each stop, of some 60+ towns and cities in total, presented a unique and memorable experience, although some of the most notable for various reasons and in no particular order include: Porto, Portugal; Bern, Switzerland; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Mostar and Jajce, Bosnia; Istanbul and Cappadocia, Turkey; and Berlin, Germany.

Venture in to read of the ups and downs of a nine month journey where his strongest, and only continuing, relationships are with his thoughts and camera.

…And for the images from each town and city on Flickr.

2006 – LIFE IN AUSTRALIA . . . and NEW ZEALAND!

Rubin was afforded a brilliant opportunity to spend five months in Adelaide, Australia from Feb – Jun 2006. There in South Australia, he trained the Australian Department of Defence scientists while escaping most weekends to various incredible locations. From the nearby vineyards of the McLaren Vale, to Flinders Chase national park of Kangaroo Island, to the desolation of the Alice outback, to the Sydney harbour, to the expansiveness of the Great Barrier Reef . . . Rubin captured it all, and more, in his captivating words and images.

In July, following threats of deportation, Rubin departed Australia for an eight day solo camper trip through winter on New Zealand’s South Island. After establishing a plan with friend and mentor, Dr. Newell Grenfell in Christchurch, Rubin set off west and then south, battling the unpredictable winter weather on this small island amongst an expansive sea. Read of, and witness, the glacier helicopter rides, the solitude of Twizel, and the risky white drive back to the airport, to board the plane back to the US with just moments to spare!
