Fashion Night Out 2011

September 26, 2011

With great excitement I returned to Darrell Dean’s Antiques in Washington, DC’s Georgetown neighborhood for Fashion Night Out 2011. And while last year saw great success with international designer Tsyndyma Kroujilov, FNO 2011 undoubtedly raised the stakes with its great variety of antique fashion brought in from up & down the east coast. The production team of renaissance man & event coordinator Mike Wong, hairdresser & stylist Mia Jackson & the staff of Blake & Co Hair Spa, numerous local & lovely models*, and Darrell Dean himself, created well composed vignettes for each model taking pose in the shop’s two Wisconsin Street bay windows. The result was stunned and delighted passerby’s in the street on this rainy Thursday evening. Astonished exclamations of “wow, is she real?! noooo, can’t be!” could be heard on a regular basis… a wonderful testament to each model’s dedication to her part.

*Models included: Victoria Chang, Crystal Day, India Franklin, Victoria Kurzweg, Sophia Manthei, Sara Moline, and Jordan Straker

Photographically… the dramatic window lighting and brilliant reflections allowed incorporation of the street audience, creating intriguing multi-layered images within single frames. Post production was limited to minor dodging and burning and b+w conversions.

Many thanks to all involved, it was a pleasure working with you!

Darrell Dean, Antique on Fashion

September 25, 2010

Now in its 13 year, DC Fashion Week is a week-long event highlighting fashion design, clothing merchandising and modeling, as well as enhancing the visibility of the nation’s capital as a center for international fashion.  On Friday, September 10th in Georgetown, Darrell Dean, owner of the popular high-end antique and art shop of the same name, and my good friend Mike Wong, together with internationally celebrated contemporary women’s designer, Tsyndyma Kroujilov, hosted a rather unique Fashion Show.  Dean and Wong elegantly bedecked both of the shop’s window boxes with models wearing Tsyndma’s latest collection, along with timeless antique furniture pieces proving that some things never go out of fashion.  Hairdresser Mia “Mohawk” Jackson was also on location showing off her rebellious red and other distinctive hair stylings, and had good fun while eventually jumping into one the window displays herself!

While initially attending as a guest, this unique creator / collector collaboration inspired me to grab the camera (and my new brilliant 24mm lens!) and shoot a few photos, forgoing the flash and sticking with the shop windows’ moody light.  I hope you enjoy and please feel free to leave comments!
